When she starts her tenure as Montgomery County president judge in January, Judge Carolyn Carluccio will have her hands full, writes Aleeza Furman for The Legal Intelligencer.

Judge Carolyn Carluccio is set to succeed Judge Thomas M. DelRicci Jr. as president judge.

She was unanimously chosen by her colleagues for the leadership post and will be the first woman to hold the position in Montgomery County.

One of the main challenges she will have to take on will be going through the sizable backlog of trial cases caused by the pandemic while also managing the space constraints arising from a major construction and renovation project.

“Our criminal and our civil systems are really backlogged, and that’s mainly because of the inability that we’ve had to have jury trials,” said Carluccio. “The cases are sitting there, and I really am going to focus the court on getting that backlog.”

She also wants to make sure that the bench works collaboratively.

“We have a great group of judges here, and I really, truly believe that as we work together, we can accomplish almost anything on this bench,” she said.
