PA’s Online Unemployment Compensation System — Often Fraught with Frustration — Is Getting a Reboot
As if being out of work isn’t bad enough, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry’s online system for filing/managing claims is often difficult to navigate, unsteady in its performance and outmoded in its layout.
That’s all about to change on June 8, with the launch of a new unemployment compensation system, writes Tom Lehman for WGAL News 8.
The improved system will replace the obsolete four-decades-old mainframe legacy system. The upgrade is intended to speed and simplify the process of claim filing in the Commonwealth.
“The new system will be easy to use, provide access to important information and streamline the unemployment claim filing process for workers, employers, unemployment program staff and third-party administrators,” said Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry Acting Secretary Jennifer Berrier.
The transfer of data between systems will require a 14-day downtime for the system, during which claimants will not be able to file. The temporary plug-pulling will affect all recipients of Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation and extended benefits.
Backdated claims will be paid in a transition period.
The new system will enable filers to launch appeals, check the status of payment and gain easier access to messaging from UC staff.
