Montgomery County is currently looking for more dedicated volunteers to help the area’s seniors with computer literacy and internet issues while registering for their COVID-19 vaccine, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.

“This call came about because of the need, of course, for seniors, who have no internet access or are technically not savvy, not being able to register for the vaccine,” said Doreen Hespell, administrator of the Office of Senior Services.

Since the call went live on February 22, over 1,700 seniors have been registered for vaccination through the county’s vaccine hotline. The phone line has gathered hundreds of volunteers who are assisting older Montgomery County residents from the comfort of their own homes.

This was made possible by the county’s partnership with Mon Ami, a technology company that made the software which allows remote registration. As a result, the only things a volunteer requires is a computer and a phone.

The training process for the volunteers takes one hour. A background check is then run.

“It’s been a very good outreach, and the volunteers are really enjoying talking to these seniors, and the seniors are very, very appreciative,” Hespell said.
