Father James Martin, a Plymouth Meeting native, appeared on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert last week to promote his new book, “Learning to Pray,” writes Kevin Tierney for More Than the Curve.

Martin, who is a graduate of Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, is a long-time guest of the popular late night show. In his latest appearance, he spoke of his most recently penned book as a guide to help people navigate their unique spiritual paths.

In the book, he makes it clear there is no one secret praying formula.

“There’s a lot of different ways to pray, I talk about them in my book.” said Martin, “It depends on who you are. There’s no right way to pray.”

There are content-heavy prayers where people imagine themselves in a scripture scene, for example, and content-light prayers where people feel themselves in the presence of God, he said.

How people pray also depends on where they are in their lives.

“Different kinds of prayers can appeal to you in different times of your lives,” said Martin.
