The Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board (VFTCB) and Lochel’s Bakery teamed up to celebrate Presidents’ Day and National Fastnacht Day.

In advance of the holiday, representatives from the tourism organization visited its member, Lochel’s Bakery, in downtown Hatboro for a celebratory cake-decorating experience and tour.

In honor of General George Washington’s birthday, cake illustrator James put his skills to the test, and decorated a two-tiered, patriotic cake exclusively for the VFTCB.

“Previously, when the schools were in person, several districts would order sheet cakes to celebrate,” said owner Kathleen Lochel. “Since most schools are currently virtual, this was something new and fun for us to do.”

As the festivities continue, Lochel’s is also preparing for National Fastnacht Day, Feb. 21, 2023.

A fastnacht is a heavy, yeast-raised potato doughnut that is typically prepared on Fat Tuesday before the start of the Lenten season.

These types of donuts are part of early-spring traditions in Pennsylvania.

With fastnacht preparation well underway, Lochel stated, “this year we’re offering eight different varieties.”

On average, the bakery sells 25,000–28,000 fastnachts over the holiday week.
