When she wrote “Flying with Dad,” Yvonne Caputo could not have predicted that her book would lead to a friendship with 103-year-old Telford veteran, Joe Haenn, writes the author for the Souderton Independent.

Caputo’s book focuses on her father’s missions in the Second World War. After she posted about them on the 467th Bombardment Group page, she received a message from Christine Herb White who asked for a copy of the book for her grandfather.

It turned out Haenn was an assistant crew chief at Rackheath during the time that the author’s father was stationed there. After a few messages were exchanged, Caputo learned that the veteran lived in the Lutheran Community of Telford, only 7.2 miles away from her.

So she started visiting Haenn – first behind glass due to the pandemic and then in person – and the two hit it off marvelously.

“The visits have happened weekly,” said Caputo. “Each time I try and find something to take to him. It might be an article from Facebook, or books that might interest him.”

In addition to the visits, the pair also talk on the phone regularly.
