The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on daily life and the economy. Similarly, it has had a major impact on merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in 2020. The Transaction Advisory Services team at local professional services firm RKL published a U.S. M&A Market Update to shed light on M&A trends across the nation and provide insight around what to expect in the remainder of 2020 and into 2021.

Among the update’s key findings:

  • M&A activity in June, July and August remained down versus the prior two years, but off by about 25 percent instead of the nearly 50 percent seen in months prior. Preliminary indications are that transaction activity will further rebound in September.
  • Transactions involving high-quality targets are reaching the finish line while others are struggling to overcome valuation gaps or post-COVID-19 visibility challenges
  • Financing remains available, but senior debt multiples decreased in the second quarter of 2020 to 2.8 times EBITDA

Download the U.S. M&A Market Update for more observations and insights, including transaction activity rates, COVID-19 M&A professionals survey results, and action items for buyers and sellers in the current environment.
