Democrat Jonathan Kassa is vying for Montgomery County’s 151st House District seat, but the COVID-19 pandemic may have cost him his best weapon, writes Maria Panaritis for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Democratic newbies have managed to win similar races and sweep Republicans out of local, county, state, and congressional seats over the last several years by using a tool that was less about campaign funds, and more about reaching out to people directly through door-knocking.

But for this election, Kassa, like many other candidates, has had to contend with several COVID-19 related complications. For example, he has not been able to properly pound the pavement and tell people about himself face-to-face. And this could end up being a problem come November.

“There is nothing as valuable as being out, even if it’s 12 feet away with a mask on, talking to someone,” said Kassa. “I’ve seen a difference.”

Another issue for him is that straight-party voting is gone for this election, which can hurt candidates down-ballot.

“I’m not only down-ballot,” Kassa said. “I’m the flea on the tail of a dog.”
