Developer Proposes New Plans for Bridgeport Riverfront Property with Catastrophic History
PRDC Properties is planning a mixed-use development project at the riverfront property in Bridgeport that has been marked by calamities throughout its history, writes Gary Puleo for The Times Herald.
In a bid for Zoning Hearing Board approval, Tony Maras, vice president and general counsel with PRDC Properties, presented the company’s plans last week at a virtual Borough Council meeting.
The plans call for a 250-unit apartment building, around 340 townhomes, and commercial space with 12 apartments above.
The former Continental Business Center has been in need of some care and attention since it was hit by the first catastrophe 21 years ago when numerous businesses suffered water damage from Hurricane Floyd. Then two years later, a massive fire destroyed many businesses at the center, including the renowned Sweetzel’s Cookies.
Following that, the property exchanged owners several times but no development plans ever materialized.
Then PRDC Properties notified the borough that it had the property under agreement in late 2019.
“In the months between then and now, PRDC has shown more thought, foresight, and commitment to the Bridgeport Community than any developer had over the last nineteen years,” said Borough Manager Keith Truman.
