Since reopening in May for the first time since the pandemic began, The Cheesecake Lady in Elkins Park has been welcomed by a daily deluge of customers lining up down the block for her delicacies, writes Jenn Ladd for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Vanessa Jackson opened the store two years ago. Before discovering her love for making cheesecakes, Jackson was director of development for Bethel Deliverance International Church in Cheltenham.

The 55-year-old baker first tried cheesecake in her thirties and immediately fell in love. Her first attempt at making one was a disaster, but after some practice, she perfected the craft.

Cheesecake making became a side job for Jackson until 2013 when she opened her first storefront in Jacksonville. But due to expensive upkeep, she had to close it three years later.

The Elkins Park location turned out to be a much better fit. The store, which Jackson runs with her eldest daughter, Brittany, sells hundreds of cakes every day. And customers are willing to deal with the long wait times just to get their hands on one.

“it’s definitely worth it,” said Marcus Cromarcy, a regular.
