Pennsylvania Ranks 49th in U.S. Among 50 States and D.C. for Least COVID-19 Restrictions

When compared to the rest of the United States, Pennsylvania is one of the more restrictive states when it comes to efforts to contain the coronavirus, according to an updated study by the personal finance website, WalletHub.

Out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania ranked 49th as of July 20 in comparing which states had the fewest COVID-19 restrictions.

South Dakota came in first with the least number of restrictions.

WalletHub compared the states in 18 key metrics, including face mask requirements in public, travel restrictions, large gathering restrictions and school re-openings.

In specific categories, as of July 20, Pennsylvania ranked:

  • 48th in reopening of restaurants and bars;
  • 34th in large gathering restrictions;
  • 31st in re-opening child care programs;
  • 28th in workplace temperature screenings;
  • 23rd in reopening of  non-essential businesses;
  • 23rd in requiring face masks in public;
  • 15th in travel restrictions;
  • 15th in working from home requirements/recommendations

Pennsylvania’s restriction ranking has also changed over time.  It was ranked 28th overall as of July 7, 40th as of June 23, 41st as of June 9, 25th as of May 19 and 47th as of May 5.
