Local heroes are making sure that Montgomery County children facing hunger amid the coronavirus pandemic are getting fed throughout the summer, writes Alfred Lubrano for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Surprised by the number of children who needed summer food in his area “which has above-average income,” Democratic State Rep. Joe Webster of Montgomery County decided to contact Nutritional Development Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

The organization provides U.S. Department of Agriculture meals to 100 feeding sites in the Philadelphia region.

Webster and his district office director Marcus E. Muli had asked several local businesses if they could divide the food provided by the Nutritional Development Services and feed as many kids as possible.

But Christopher Carbonara, owner of Via Roma Italian Restaurant & Sports Bar in Eagleville, offered to store all the food at his restaurant, which is shuttered due to the pandemic.

“My thinking was simple,” he said. “People in this community support me every day. It allows me to afford my house.”

Now, Webster’s office runs an operation that feeds around 1,200 meals to up to 300 children every Tuesday and Thursday.
