Sculptor Is Raising Funds for Kobe Bryant Statue in Lower Merion

By

Sculptor Greg Marra is hoping to get support from local officials and residents and raise funds for a statue of Kobe Bryant in Lower Merion, the NBA legend’s hometown, writes Michael Tanenbaum for the Philly Voice.

The artist, who is currently homeless, envisions a sculpture of Bryant outstretched in a shooting motion, but with no basketball in his hand. He would be accompanied by his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, who died with him in the tragic helicopter accident in January.

One of her hands would be in her father’s, while the other would be holding a basketball to symbolize Bryant’s role as an inspiration to younger generations.

Marra has been in contact with the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners members in the hopes of building support and securing a spot for his art in Bryant’s hometown.

So far, two commissioners have embraced the project. Now Michael McKeon and Anthony Stevenson plan to take it up with the other board members and the community as a whole.

“It’s a positive, unifying factor that inspires people to try to be the best they can,” said McKeon.
