The Main Line School District That Just Proved It’s One of the Best in Pennsylvania

Lower Merion School District climbed to No. 2 in Pennsylvania in the latest rankings. Here's what the numbers say about its rise.

For families choosing where to plant roots on the Main Line, school district quality is often the first conversation. The latest statewide rankings give them one more reason to feel good about that decision, writes The Philadelphia Business Journal.

Lower Merion School District has climbed to No. 2 in Pennsylvania. The district moved up from No. 3 last year. It trails only Fox Chapel Area School District in Allegheny County in a field of 500 school districts.

The methodology behind the rankings is rigorous. More than 250 data points were drawn from Pennsylvania System of School Assessment exams and Keystone Exams spanning 2023 through 2025. They measured student performance across math, reading, science, algebra, literature, and biology.

Districts were scored based on the percentage of students placing in the top testing categories. This makes it one of the most comprehensive academic performance snapshots available at the state level.

The Philadelphia suburbs performed exceptionally well overall, claiming 10 of Pennsylvania’s top 25 spots. Lower Merion led the regional pack, but the surrounding area showed considerable depth.

Radnor Township School District came in at No. 4. Tredyffrin-Easttown School District landed at No. 10. Colonial School District claimed No. 22.

For Lower Merion, the ranking is the latest chapter in a long record of academic distinction. The district, which serves communities including Ardmore, Bala Cynwyd, Gladwyne, and Penn Wynne, has built a reputation that extends well beyond standardized test scores.

Graduation rates, advanced placement participation, teacher quality, and parent satisfaction consistently place it among the nation’s elite suburban systems. Both Niche and U.S. News & World Report have repeatedly recognized the district at the national level as well.

What the rankings ultimately confirm is something the numbers alone cannot fully capture: that Lower Merion has not simply maintained its standard of excellence, it has raised it.

In a state with 500 school districts and no shortage of high-performing suburban systems, moving up means doing something right.
