Following backlash over the decision to start elementary school earlier each day to allow older students to sleep later, Lower Merion school officials are asking the district to delay the planned changes, writes Maddie Hanna for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Lower Merion is one of a growing number of districts that are considering pushing back start times for older students in line with guidance from the American Medical Association and various other organizations.

According to the current proposal, the start time at the district’s two high schools would be pushed back to 8:25 a.m. from its current 7:30 a.m.

Meanwhile middle school would be pushed back from to 9:05 a.m. from 8:15. This change would also move elementary schools from 9 to 7:45 a.m. However this has caused consternation among parents of younger children who said that the change would create child-care hurdles, among other issues.

The school board will vote on the proposal this spring. However district officials now believe no changes should be implemented this fall. This in turn, upset both parents and older students who have been lobbying for this change for years.
