Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro Running for Re-Election

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, who lives in Abington with his wife and children, talks taking on President Trump and COVID-19.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, a former Montgomery County commissioner and state lawmaker, is running for re-election, writes Ron Southwick for the Penn Live.

Shapiro, a Democrat, announced his bid for reelection earlier this week on social media.

“Four years ago, I asked for your support when I announced my decision to run for Attorney General,” he wrote. “I said we’d take on the big fights, defend the rule of law, and stand up to special interests trying to take advantage of Pennsylvanians. And together, we’ve done just that.”

Shapiro found himself in the national spotlight for his investigation of the clergy sexual abuse of children in Pennsylvania dioceses.

The case caused a heated debate in Harrisburg, after which lawmakers changed the state law to eliminate the statute of limitations for criminal cases involving child sexual abuse as well as raised the age for civil suits.

Shapiro also cited his work in addressing the opioid crisis by suing a number of drug manufacturers, accusing them of achieving huge profits of addictions.

Shapiro’s likely opponent will be Pittsburgh lawyer Heather Heidelbaugh, who is seeking the Republican nomination for attorney general.
