West Chester East graduate Duriel Hardy and Bishop Shanahan graduate Kayla Lampe are among more than a handful of Philadelphia-area healthcare professionals who are going to test their speed and endurance at the Olympic marathon trials next month in Atlanta, writes Tom Avril for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Hardy, 31, who ran track at Brown University, is currently in his fifth year of a pediatric neurology fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He got into distance running because it, much like medicine, requires an intense and sustained dedication that hopefully leads to a payoff in the future.

“It’s not something you practice for a week, and then you’re amazing at it,” said Hardy. “It’s something where you put in the miles for months and years.”

Lampe, 27, is an emergency-room nurse at Bryn Mawr Hospital. She began her running career on the cross-country and track teams at Shanahan, before competing at the University of South Carolina.

Now, she’s ready to take on Atlanta.

“It’s a lifetime goal,” Lampe said.
