The family-run Storybook Musical Theatre at Gratz College in Elkins Park makes Philadelphia-area children roar with laughter with their hilarious shows, according to a staff report from the 6abc.

The theater is truly a family affair: mom is the artistic director, dad serves as the executive director, and their two daughters handle the stage – one on and the other behind the scenes. Even the family dog is involved in some of the performances.

This week marked the theater’s 28th season in show business. According to its secretary of the board, Aileen Goldberg, Storybook Musical Theatre is the “longest-running professional union theatre for young audiences in the Philadelphia area.”

The group designs the shows for audiences ages 3 to 10. The slapstick nature of the actors’ physical comedy always has children asking for more. However, the constant comedy and drama in the plays is exciting enough to engage even the adults in the audience.

The theater focuses on cultural enrichment and stimulating children’s imaginations, said Goldberg. This exposure to the arts at an early age can help develop the next generation of cooperative and diverse adults, he added.
