Some local elementary parents are not happy with the way Lower Merion School District is planning to reorder its school start timeswrites Maddie Hanna for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Guided by scientific research that showthat children entering puberty benefit from later wake-up times, the district is planning to push back the start of the school day for middle and high school students.

However, to implement this, it also plans to move the start of elementary school from 9 a.m. to 7:45.

This has parents worried that in addition to having to wake their children up earlier,  some of them might find it even harder to find child care if the school day ends 75 minutes earlier.

Now after years of discussing the issue, the administrators will finally present an update to the school board that will allow for a vote on the issue early next year.

But hoping to get the district to reconsider, some parents have been vocal during listening sessions and have also started a petition online, saying the current plan “simply shifts sleep deprivation from high schoolers to elementary school children.”
