During the keynote address at the Philadelphia Alliance for Capital and Technologies’ annual capital conference, Brian Westbrook took the opportunity to share the lessons that helped him go from NFL star to venture capitalist at Conshohocken’s Seventy Six Capital, writes Michelle Caffrey for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The former Eagles running back emphasized the importance of not quitting and how sticking with football after a rough start of his career led him to persevere in business years later.

“In business, you’re going to hear ‘Your business isn’t good enough, isn’t fast enough, you’re not smart enough to be able to do what you want to do,” Westbrook said. “They told me all those things.”

Another important point is to drop your pride and outwork everybody else, he said. When he was not drafted in the first round, he did not despair. He simply realized he had to work harder than everybody around him.

Finally he said, to be successful in business it is important to surround yourself with the best people and take time to really learn the ropes.
