The Joy in Childhood Foundation (JICF), the charitable foundation powered by Dunkin’ and Baskin-Robbins, granted Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia a trained in-residence dog at a canine-themed “Day of Joy” welcome event.

The event gave patients, staff and their families a chance to celebrate the newest canine team member while enjoying dog-themed crafts and the unveiling of dog supplies ranging from bedding to toys.

In-residence dogs can be a critical part of treatment teams, trained to do tasks like teach kids how to take a pill, keep a child calm during a medical intervention, provide incentives for a child to get out of bed for a walk, and much more. In partnership with their designated trained handler, these dogs are trained to have a positive impact on the healing process.

Formally launched in 2018, the Joy in Childhood Foundation’s Dogs for Joy program places highly specialized dogs in residence as full-time employees of children’s hospitals nationwide. These dogs are critical parts of treatment teams, trained to do tasks like teach kids how to take a pill, keep a child calm during a medical intervention, provide incentives for a child to get out of bed for a walk, and much more. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia submitted a successful grant proposal to the Dogs for Joy team earlier this year.
