Royal Farms coming to county seat

Norristown is about to get the Royal treatment.

After what seems like years, Royal Farms is finally cleared to build a new location on Markley Street, just south of the intersection of Johnson Highway.

Ed DiMarcantonio, with Axis Realty, gave a presentation Wednesday morning, July 24 to members of the Greater Norristown Corporation outlining the development of the former Ports of the World site, which is now known as Norristown Centre.

Plans for the parcel initially included a movie studio, but that deal unraveled years ago, even after the state committed $10 million to the project.

DiMarcantonio said all permits have been approved and they would be turning over the site to Royal Farms, which is similar to what we now call Super Wawas, but with a reputation for having delicious fried chicken, in the 4th quarter of this year. Royal Farms is expecting to start building soon after with a project spring opening, depending on the weather.

Demolition of the former site was taking place in earnest in March of 2018, as we outlined in this story.

There is also another pad site available at the same location on the Johnson Highway side that would be perfect for a bank. DiMarcantonio said a full service restaurant would also be a good fit, but not fast food, because it would be in direct competition with the Royal Farms, which signed a 20-year lease for the site.
