First York Rd parking lot opens in Jenkintown Center

Town Square

Jenkintown is one of historic jewels of Montgomery County. It was settled in 1697 and in recent years was the setting for a television series. The stores and restaurants which flank York Road (Rte 611) are the economic hub of the town.

Until June this year, someone driving through Jenkintown planning to shop or have a meal, or take in a movie at the Hiway Theater looked in vain for a parking lot opening onto York Road. The Borough provides excellent and ample parking behind and off York Road. Now there is a York Road parking option. Locally owned, this is the only such lot in Jenkintown Center. And it offers a 12% discount to readers of MONTCO.Today (enter Coupon 121212 at the kiosk).

The “Jenkintown Parking” lot is between West Avenue and Cherry Street, across from Fill-a-Bagel, and steps from the West Avenue Grill, the Drake Tavern and the Hiway Theater. Parking time can be extended by phone. It is open 24 hours a day. Because of its location, the parking lot is especially appreciated by the elderly, disabled, mobility-impaired and by anyone who needs to save time or steps in accessing York Road.

The other end of the lot is across the street from the former Times Chronicle Building on Johnson Street, now called the Archways Professional Building. Both the lot and the building are owned by David Ferleger, a civil rights attorney with a national practice. Mr. Ferleger filed and argued in the U.S. Supreme Court the landmark lawsuit on the rights of the disabled which is the basis of the documentary “Pennhurst” being screened July 24 at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute (recently featured in MONTCO.Today).

“I’m thrilled to provide this needed encouragement to visitors to our town to stop and take a look around, as well as a convenient parking space for town residents and businesses,” said Mr. Ferleger. “The town’s ample spaces are often filled. This is an added resource which benefits everyone,” he said.
