Phoenixville’s downtown revitalization plan has been especially good for the borough’s craft-brewery scene, with 10 breweries and distilleries operating in the area, writes Gary Stoller for Forbes.

So many breweries in a borough of less than 20,000 residents is not usually a recipe for success. But instead of focusing just on the local population, the breweries work in harmony to make Phoenixville a brewery destination.

One of the more recent additions, Root Down Brewing, opened in June 2017, and has already managed to capture both gold and silver at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver last September. The medals from what is widely regarded as the Super Bowl of craft beer were a surprise even to the brewery’s management, as they were competing against more than 8,000 beers from 2,400 breweries.

Last year, Root Down joined forces with Iron Hill, Crowded Castle, and Stable 12 breweries and Bluebird Distilling to create a collaborative beer and bring attention to the borough’s thriving craft scene. The partnership calls itself “Phoenixville Craft Revolution.”

“The more breweries, the more draw,” said Root Down owner Mike Hamara. “We all go by the belief that a rising tide raises all ships.”
