Take note of the holiday shipping deadlines set by the major players

Holiday shopping isn’t always a joyful experience — but online shopping seems to make life just a bit merrier. Unless, of course, you’re fretting over shipping deadlines.

So, to make things a bit less frantic, here are deadlines of some major players in the game of holiday shopping. These are the dates you’ll need to be mindful of if you’re doing your shopping online or buying gifts and shipping them to far-off friends and family. writes David A. • FedEx Corp.: Dec. 17 is the last day to ship FedEx Home Delivery or FedEx Ground and be guaranteed to have your package make it by Dec. 25. FedEx 2Day shipments should be sent by Dec. 20 and FedEx overnight shipments should be sent by Dec. 21. FedEx has lots of different services with lots of different deadlines, and they are all listed here.

• United Parcel Service Inc.: The last day to ship a package for delivery before Christmas through UPS 2nd Day Air is Dec. 20. The holiday deadline for UPS Next Day Air service is Dec. 21. The company has more details on its schedule here as well as a tool to calculate time and costs for shipping.

• U.S. Postal Service: The last day to ship a domestic package with the Postal Service’s Retail Ground Service and have it arrive by Christmas is Dec. 14. The deadline for First Class and Priority Mail is Dec. 20. And the Priority Mail Express deadline is Dec. 22. There’s more information about international and military mailing deadlines here.

• Amazon.com Inc.: Amazon is more into retailing than shipping (for now, anyway) but it offers guidance on holiday shipping deadlines as well. The last day to use the company’s Free Shipping by Amazon service is Dec. 14, and the last day for Standard Shipping (which is free with Amazon Prime) is Dec. 17. The company has more details on its Two-Day, One-Day and Same-Day deadlines here.
