For those of you who are thinking the construction on Route 422 in Montgomery County may never end, there’s hope for at least one section of the very important commuter artery.

The ramp from 422 East to Route 23 will close for several months beginning Feb. 12 (Monday) and will continue to be unavailable until later summer, PennDOT said, as its contractors build a new “fly-over ramp” there.

Those hoping to exit at 23 must instead pass it and continue east on 422 to its First Avenue exit. Drivers will then be directed to turn left on Gulph Road to reach 23. Expect backups and delays, PennDOT warned. That means drivers also should allow additional time for travel near the construction zone.

The ramp and other improvements at the 23 interchange are part of that $97.4 million project that also involves building wider bridges to carry 422 drivers across the Schuylkill River, Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks, South Trooper Road, and the Schuylkill River Trail in portions of West Norriton, Upper Merion and Lower Providence townships.

Construction began in February 2016. It won’t end, PennDOT said, until May 2020.
