Philadelphia and Pennsylvania were well represented among cities and states receiving grants from the National Institutes of Health under the 2017 federal budget.

Pennsylvania ranked fourth in both the number of grants, at 3,582, and the total amount of the awards, at $1.67 billion, while New Jersey ranked 25th, write John George and Jeff Jeffrey  at bizjournals.com.

The budget brought a big boost to the NIH, which received $37 billion — $3 billion more than the previous fiscal year.

Philadelphia ranked fourth in total NIH funding, at $923.7 million in 2017. The University of Pennsylvania alone was responsible for more than half that amount with 1,127 grants totaling $493.9 million.
