CVS makes move to buy Aetna

One of the largest drug stores in the northeast is about to buy one of the largest health care insurance providers in the region.

Aetna shareholders voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to approve the CVS Health’s plan to buy the health insurer for $69 billion. About 97 percent of the votes cast were in support of the merger plan first proposed in early December, writes John George for Philadelphia Business Journal.

Once the deal is completed, Aetna shareholders will receive $145 in cash and 0.8378 of a CVS Health share for each Aetna share they own.

Connecticut-based Aetna, which has about 38 million members nationwide, is the Philadelphia region’s second largest private health insurer behind only Independence Blue Cross. The company has a regional office in Blue Bell at the former headquarters of U.S. Healthcare — which Aetna bought in 1996 for $8.8 billion.
