New Philadelphia Team to Join Conshohocken-based National Lacrosse League

The National Lacrosse League in Conshohocken will soon be joined by a new professional team from Philadelphia.

A new professional Philadelphia lacrosse team will soon be making its debut in Conshohocken’s National Lacrosse League, writes John George for Philadelphia Business Journal.

Three years since the city lost its professional lacrosse team to Connecticut, Comcast Spectacor is now filling the void with its recently acquired National Lacrosse League franchise. The name and schedule of games for the new arrival are expected to be announced at an upcoming press conference.

The National Lacrosse League is led by Nick Sakiewicz, the former chief executive officer of the Philadelphia Union. After leaving the Major League Soccer club two years ago, he was named the National Lacrosse League commissioner in January last year.

Sakiewicz is a big proponent of bringing a professional lacrosse team back to Philadelphia.

“We have to bring a team here,” he said. “Philadelphia is an absolute must. There is a robust season-ticket base that is really unhappy the Wings left here.”

He said that fans are not shy about telling him how much they miss the departed team and how much they want it back, adding that “Anybody who brings the Wings back here will be an instant hero.”
