Sakiewicz Joins National Lacrosse League after Leaving Philadelphia Union

After being ousted from Philadelphia Union, Nick Sakiewicz has found new purpose as the commissioner of the National Lacrosse League, writes Jack McCaffery for Daily Times.
A longtime soccer fan, Sakiewicz was instrumental in bringing the Union to the area seven years ago and building it into one of the major successes of Major League Soccer. However, after a few years Union began to regularly lose games and the fans turned on Sakiewicz, demanding his dismissal.
“I was a prominent figure, the face of the club,” said Sakiewicz. “Someone has to answer and take the heat, I guess.”

However, it did not take long before he became interested in lacrosse. His new office as the NLL commissioner is in Conshohocken even though the league does not currently have a Philadelphia franchise. In fact, Sakiewicz is very comfortable in Montgomery County and has no intention of moving.
“I may not have been born in Philly,” he said, “but I am a Philly guy.”
Sakiewicz knows the NLL is thriving and predicts its future expansion into Philadelphia as one of the possibilities. In fact, outdoor lacrosse is already becoming increasingly popular at the high school and college levels, making this region a market ripe for growth.
