Rosemont College is leading the way in efforts to curb the spiraling cost of tuition at private higher education institutions across the country, writes Catherine Morris for Diverse Education.

As a first step, the Bryn Mawr College reduced the tuition costs for the 2016-2017 school year from $46,000 to $30,000. This quickly saw result with enrollment up 15 percent for the year.

Other private colleges are also trying to find ways to bring costs down including collaboration. The National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities is hoping to get Congress to implement a temporary rollback of federal antitrust laws. These prevent private colleges from discussing tuition fees to prevent collusion.

“As prices have escalated, we’re all sitting here wondering how can we best control the price perception issue, drive the price down, drive the discount rate down with it and get to a cost that is more aligned with the real cost to us per capita to run the institution,” said Dr. Steven R. DiSalvo, president of Saint Anselm College.
