Arkema’s chemical plant in Texas is under close supervision due to fears of an explosion, writes Joseph N. DiStefano for Philly.com.

The global chemical company that has its U.S. headquarters in King of Prussia, sent out a warning on Tuesday that its organic-peroxides plant in Crosby could be in danger of burning or exploding. This prompted Texas officials to evacuate nearby residents.

The company closed the factory on August 25 as Hurricane Harvey threatened to flood the Houston area, but Arkema’s maintenance crew continued working to keep the electricity running.

However, when the power failed, the danger of an explosion began to grow. This forced the company to evacuate its remaining staff with the help of the Crosby city fire department.

“The site has been heavily flooded and without electric service since early Sunday morning,“ said Arkema in a statement. The “back-up generators have largely been inundated with water.“

This has compromised some of the storage containers, with no way for Arkema to rectify this until the storm recedes. The company is currently monitoring the situation remotely and notifying officials of any changes and potential threats.
