Haiti is in desperate need of more schools, and helping make that happen can be an incredibly enriching experience, writes Bala Cynwyd Middle School teacher Leslie Bullitt for Philly.com.

Children in Haiti sometimes have to walk several miles and cross rivers and steep inclines to reach classes packed with 150 students. Moved by this, Bullitt traveled with buildOn to the southwestern Haiti village of La Civette.

The nonprofit builds schools in villages all around the world. So far, the organization has constructed schools in Haiti and other countries such as Nicaragua and Senegal.

When Bullitt arrived in Haiti, her group was welcomed with singing and dancing hosts.

“Many participants were so overcome with emotion they shed tears as they got out of their trucks,” she said.

The trip was filled with many more amazing experiences.

“We visited a church and ended up hiking in La Monte through beautiful paths in the countryside and learned about furniture making from the village leader.”

When it was time to go home, Bullitt thanked the village leader and told him how much she had learned from this unforgettable experience.
