Honey Brook’s Andrew Turner took full advantage of his home turf to win the coveted $100,000 first prize at the Haverford Trust Philadelphia PGA Classic held at Plymouth Meeting’s Sunnybrook Golf Club, writes Joe Juliano for Philly.com.
“I think the biggest check I ever won before this was five or six thousand bucks,” said Turner. “So this is a little jump.” This also marks a major milestone in the assistant pro’s career, as it is the most money he has ever won.
A few competitors in the morning tried to keep up with him, but Turner held them off with a four-under-par score of 68. Turner then spent rest of the day monitoring the leader board, keeping a close eye on the updated results as the later players began their rounds.
“Waiting this year was better than last year,” he said. “Last year, I shot a 69. I waited about 15 minutes and a 67 was posted and I went home.”
Several competitors in the afternoon groups did try to catch up. In particular, Justin Riegel secured a four under par over 12 holes, but his momentum fizzled out after he bogeyed four of his last six.
