Several school districts in Montgomery County have received Alternative Fuels Incentive Grants totaling $1.9 million awarded by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Quality to businesses and school districts to help reduce the pollution from their vehicles, writes Ryan Gray for School Transportation News.

East Stroudsburg Area School District won two grants. The first is for $200,000 and will be used for the purchase of 52 new propane school buses. This will start the district’s conversion of its entire fleet of 122 buses to alternative fuel.

The other grant of $180,000 will be used to build two propane refueling stations which could potentially fuel not just the school’s fleet, but other vehicles from neighboring school districts.

Hatboro-Horsham School District will use its $22,500 grant to offset the cost of buying five new propane school buses, which will be fueled at the Upper Moreland School District’s propane fueling station.

“The buses, cars, and trucks purchased and rebuilt with these grants will reduce air pollution,” said Patrick McDonnell, acting secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. “These types of projects pay economic and environmental dividends for communities and Pennsylvania at large.”
