What PJM’s New Plan Means for Power in Montgomery County

Audubon-based PJM proposes adding power supply to prevent shortages as demand rises, driven by data centers and growth.

Audubon’s PJM Interconnection is laying out plans to stay ahead of future power needs, writes Ethan Howland for Utility Dive.

The power grid manager wants to line up new power sources in anticipation of a surge from emerging data centers across the region.

The proposal involves a two-step approach designed to secure enough power for the future. First, PJM would help connect energy providers with large users to strike direct deals. If that still doesn’t meet demand, PJM would step in and run a centralized auction, where providers bid to supply electricity, ensuring the grid has enough reliable power available.

Altogether, the plan could bring nearly 15 gigawatts of new energy online, enough to power millions of homes, though that number could change as utilities review the proposal.

The bigger picture is a race against time. PJM estimates the region could face a significant energy shortfall over the next decade if new sources aren’t built quickly enough. Growing power demand, coupled with the time to build the infrastructure, makes the timeline all the more urgent.
