Chester County Hitting Line Drives When It Comes to Producing Top Baseball Talent

Downingtown West's Whippets are 13-1 for recent season stats.

In southeastern Pennsylvania, baseball season is heating up as area schools continue to produce top talent when it comes to playing ball—evident through recent stats and wins from young players, writes Joseph Santoliquito for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Updates on high school graduates like Malvern Prep’s Tague Davis and stats from Downingtown West High School’s team are generating excitement among fans and families.

Davis is a sophomore at University of Louisville and already leads college baseball with his high number of home runs (26) and RBIs (78).

Malvern Prep has participated in every PAISAA championship since 2012. Currently, the Friars have three consecutive wins with a total of eight so far. They have also won five-straight Inter-Academic championships.

Coach Freddy Hilliard has led the team for 16 seasons, producing over 400 victories. Last year, Malvern clocked in at 32-5.

“Kids are so much more advanced today. They play more baseball than we ever did. Growing in the late-1990s, the weight room wasn’t a thing. It is today,” said Hilliard. “Combine that with travel ball and fall ball, individual coaching at a younger level, it’s a big part of why baseball has grown in this area.”

Downingtown West’s Whippets are No. 2 in District 1 Class 6A, with current season stats of 13-1, a jump from last year’s 7-14 overall finish. Coach Scott Rambo, who’s been leading for seven years, expressed that this season is “the best start in my time as coach.”

The Whippets are showcasing the talents of seniors Jake Downie, Daniel Kershner, and Luke Dovidio, alongside numerous up-and-comers.
