Help Name Elmwood Park Zoo’s Baby Ocelot in Norristown

Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown is asking the public to help name its baby ocelot, offering three choices for the newborn cub.

Elmwood Park Zoo is giving Montco residents a chance to help name one of its newest and cutest arrivals, according to Marcela Camargo for NBC10 Philadelphia.

The Norristown zoo recently welcomed a female ocelot cub, born February 1 to parents Rio and Mateo. After several weeks of careful monitoring and bonding time, the public is now being invited to vote on the cub’s name.

Zoo officials say the birth came with added challenges, as Rio was considered a high-risk, first-time mother. Despite that, she delivered the cub naturally, and staff implemented a low-disturbance protocol to give both animals the best chance to thrive. Because ocelots are naturally solitary, the zoo relied on Rio’s instincts to care for and protect her newborn.

With the cub now growing stronger, the zoo’s animal care team has narrowed the naming options to three: Fia, Lucia, and Yara. These names each carry meanings tied to nature, strength, or light.

The naming campaign offers a fun way for the community to engage with the zoo while highlighting the importance of conservation and animal care.

For many local families, it’s also a chance to feel connected to one of Montgomery County’s most popular attractions.
