Montco Trail Challenge Invites Residents to Explore History with Every Step

Montgomery County’s Trail Challenge returns with 18 trails and new historic sites, encouraging residents to explore and stay active.

Montgomery County’s popular outdoor tradition is back, giving residents a fun way to explore local trails while staying active, writes Emily Neil for WHYY.

The annual Montco Trail Challenge officially kicked off last weekend, inviting participants to visit 18 trails and, for the first time, four historic sites across the county. The Montgomery County Office of Public Health organized the challenge, blending exercise with exploration through a scavenger hunt-style experience.

Registered participants search for unique symbols posted at trailheads, often animal-themed, marking their progress along the way. This year’s additions bring a historical twist. Stops include Pennypacker Mills, Peter Wentz Farmstead, John James Audubon Center, and Pottsgrove Manor.

The free program runs through early December, with prizes awarded to those who complete five, 10, or 15 or more stops. Open to all ages and ability levels, the challenge continues to draw a wide range of participants, from young children to seniors.

County officials say the initiative is designed to encourage residents to take advantage of Montgomery County’s extensive trail network while improving both physical and mental well-being. Survey data from previous years shows that most participants discover new parks and report increased activity levels.

For those looking to get outside and experience more of what Montco has to offer, the Trail Challenge provides a simple and engaging way to do it.
