The Art of Words: Flourtown Artist Turns Text Into Philly Icons

Flourtown artist Dan Duffy creates striking images using only words, blending Philly sports history, art, and hometown pride.

When you first see a piece by Dan Duffy, it looks like a familiar image — a legendary athlete, a stadium, a Philly icon frozen in time. Step closer, and the picture reveals its secret: it’s built entirely from words.

A Montco native, Duffy grew up in Lansdale, attended North Penn High School, and now lives in Flourtown. He describes his work as “pointillism with letters.” From a distance, the tiny text blends into a cohesive image. Up close, viewers discover the words themselves — dates, stats, lyrics, names, and moments that give each piece deeper meaning.

Duffy gravitated toward detailed, methodical work early on. The breakthrough came in 2008, when he created his first “Art of Words” piece after the Phillies’ World Series run. He painstakingly wrote every game, opponent, and score from that championship season to form the image of Brad Lidge on his knees after the final out. That piece sparked a business — and a calling.

“We took prints to tailgates in 2009,” Dan Duffy explained. “I went to the people that parked next to us, and I said, ‘Hey, I made this.’ And the first people I showed them to bought one.”

Since then, Duffy has created word-based portraits celebrating sports legends, iconic stadiums, and even musicians. Each subject dictates its own vocabulary: sacks for Reggie White, fights for Flyers enforcer Dave Schultz, or full rosters spelling out entire franchises. Some large-scale works take a month or more to complete.

While his art has found fans well beyond Montgomery County, Duffy says staying local matters. He credits the Philadelphia-area community with supporting him through the early years, buying his work when it mattered most. “Every time I thought I was dead in the water,” he said, “the people of Philly came through.”

Today, Duffy continues creating from Flourtown — turning words into images, as he roots on the home team.

With a knowing chuckle, he offers a bit of reassurance to fellow Birds fans still stinging from the early playoff exit: “It’s going to be okay. It’s not your fault.”
