Bryn Mawr’s Arrowroot Blends Food, Wellness, and Community

Arrowroot Apothecary & Café in Bryn Mawr blends plant-based dining with wellness, continuing a 50-year legacy in Montgomery County.

A longtime wellness destination in Montgomery County continues to evolve, blending food, health, and community in the heart of Bryn Mawr, writes Alicia Vitarelli for 6 ABC Action News.

Arrowroot Apothecary & Café has been a fixture along Lancaster Avenue for decades, but its current chapter reflects a modern take on holistic living. When the original business faced closure, integrative health practitioner Debbi Niggeman stepped in to revive it, relocating the concept in 2018 and expanding its focus.

Today, Arrowroot operates as both a café and an apothecary, offering organic, plant-based meals alongside wellness products ranging from supplements to skincare. The café menu features freshly prepared, gluten-free dishes — including customer favorites like sesame braised tofu — as well as smoothies and daily soups made with whole ingredients.

Beyond the food, the space emphasizes a deeper approach to wellness. Niggeman said the goal is to help customers understand the root causes behind how they feel, offering guidance and products designed to support long-term health.

That combination of nutrition, education, and community has helped sustain Arrowroot’s legacy while introducing it to a new generation of customers.
