Wawa just got a nearly 50 percent tax reduction on its corporate headquarters in Chester Heights, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.
Its valuation will drop $40 million, from about $75 million to $35 million, after Wawa successfully appealed the 2020 assessed value of two parcels of land at 260 W. Baltimore Pike, the location of its corporate headquarters.
The Delaware County Board of Tax Assessment Appeals heard the appeal.
The reassessment will mean up to 50 percent less tax revenue from Wawa for its corporate headquarters to Delaware County, the Garnet Valley School District, and Chester Heights Borough.
The reassessment did not sit well with Chester Heights Council Member Marta Driscoll.
“If the money isn’t coming from Wawa, it’s coming from our residents,” Driscoll said.
She said it might have been worth fighting the appeal.
“In the end, if one of the jurisdictions spent $100,000 fighting it or trying to figure it out, we’d save millions for our residents.”
Chester Heights Borough Council will be discussing the reassessment on March 2.
Garnet Valley Superintendent Dr. Marc Bertrando said the school district could now owe Wawa millions in overpaid taxes.
