The start of baseball season at Lansdale Catholic High School carries a deeper meaning this year, as players honor a teammate, writes Rob Kuestner for NBC 10 Philadelphia.
John Gendek, a freshman who dreamed of playing for the program, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain cancer just days into the school year. After more than a year of fighting, he passed away in October, leaving behind a lasting legacy.
This season, the team is honoring him by wearing “JG 3” on their cleats, along with patches on their hats and helmets. The tribute that keeps his presence on the field every game.
Gendek’s story also reached beyond the local community. During a visit to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts invited John to help design cleats for the NFL’s “My Cause, My Cleats” initiative. This gave Gendek a chance to share his story on a national stage.
Coaches say the team’s tribute is about more than remembrance. It’s about unity. Players are rallying around each other and carrying forward the spirit of a teammate who loved the game.
