Ardmore’s Dan Porter Turns Overtime Into a $500M Sports Media Giant

Ardmore native Dan Porter built Overtime into a $500M sports media empire, giving young athletes a platform beyond rankings and recruiting.

Ardmore’s Dan Porter turned the idea of giving young athletes a platform into Overtime, a sports media company with over $500 million, writes Joseph Santoliquito for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Porter left his executive post at William Morris Endeavor in 2016 when he noticed the gap between how kids played sports and how they were seen. He started with interns filming basketball games at New York playgrounds. Soon, Porter built Overtime into a digital brand that thrives on social media and resonates with millions of young fans.

In 2021, he co-founded Overtime Elite, a professional basketball league for 17 to 20-year-olds. At OTE, players earned a minimum of $100,000 annually. Since then, Overtime has expanded into Football, women’s basketball, and boxing. OTE’s Atlanta arena doubles as a training and education hub. Its players are already making a mark in the NBA Draft.

Porter’s entrepreneurial instincts are nothing new. He co-founded TicketWeb and sold it to Ticketmaster. Later, he created the mobile game hit Draw Something, acquired by Zynga for $180 million.

But for Porter, Overtime was more than the numbers. “Everyone else had chopped up the high school sports world into recruiting and player rankings,” he said. “We were about the beauty and culture of young people.”
