For decades, Red Hill VFW Post 5954 has served as a community space where veterans can find companionship over meals and, for those in deeper need, a path toward housing and hope, reports Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.
“This VFW dates to the early 1950s, late 1940s,” said Thomas Sally, District 16 Commander, Montgomery County VFW.
A primary goal of the VFW is to help homeless veterans get back on their feet, which led them to purchase a neighboring property and then converting it into an outreach center. Now they are hoping that, once the necessary permits are obtained, the building’s second floor can serve as transitional housing for homeless veterans. This initiative is supported in part by a monthly breakfast fundraiser.
“The monthly morning breakfast is a great way for the community to get together,” said Sally. “Veterans come to the breakfast to get the camaraderie and support from other veterans that they’ve been lacking, I think, when they got out of the service.”
The Red Hill VFW assists every veteran, whether they have experienced combat or not.
