The courses at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square have been temporarily closed to its own members since November as the club prepares to welcome players and 200,000 spectators in May for the 2026 PGA Championship May 11-17, writes John George for Philadelphia Business Journal.
They will remain closed until the championship concludes.
Temporary construction started last week to get the club ready.
“We’ve gone from the concept stage, with all the drawings, to the execution stage,” said Michael Lewers, general chairman for the upcoming event and an Aronimink member. “Some infrastructure is already going in despite the snow.”
The hospitality suites, viewing stands, concession stands, media centers, operations tents, and other structures will go up over the next two months.
TV towers are also going up, along with huge video boards, Lewers said.
Most of Aronimink’s 600 members have supported the temporary ban, seeing the tournament as a once in a multi-generational event.
When members do return to the course, they will be able to play temporarily on the same layout used by the professionals in the Championship. Members will then vote whether to revert the course to its previous conditions.
Cost for all the prep work is shared between the club and the PGA, with the club receiving a percentage of the revenue generated by the tournament.
Pennsylvania is also lending some support., writes Mike Larson in a separate article appearing in the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development is providing $600,000 in Sports Marketing and Tourism Program grants to the PGA Tournament Corp. Inc., for fees associated with hosting the 2026 PGA Championship in May 2026 at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square.
