Mark Asher, principal of Asher Slaunwhite + Partners in Jenkintown, is defining a new “soft modern” aesthetic for the Jersey Shore homes, writes Terri Akman for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Wooden gambrel roofs, cedar siding, and covered porches are among Asher’s signature details, complemented by interior spaces extending naturally to patios and pools. Over the last four decades, he has shaped coastal homes and properties throughout the Philadelphia suburbs, designing residences ranging from 1,200-square-foot cottages to expansive 15,000-square-foot mansions.
His career began in 1986 with the redesign of his parents’ home, a 1,800-square-foot Cape Cod in Ocean City.
“I suppose my parents were looking for a return on their investment,” said Asher. “The house was serviceable. It stood up and didn’t leak, which puts me well ahead of most architects’ first-house experience.”
That job taught him many lessons, including that he still had a lot to learn and that becoming truly skilled required mastering different disciplines.
He is quick to share credit for his success with those who have helped and inspired him over the years, including his wife Susan, a longtime collaborator. He also gives back by mentoring young architects early in their careers.
