Is Eataly Worth the Hype? Inside King of Prussia’s Newest Draw

Eataly has arrived at King of Prussia Mall, bringing Italian flair and a food-hall experience that’s more spectacle than grocery run.

The arrival of Eataly at the King of Prussia Mall is less about grocery shopping, and more about the experience, writes Jason Sheehan for Philadelphia Magazine.

Open for just a few months, Eataly has quickly become one of the mall’s biggest draws, pulling in shoulder-to-shoulder crowds eager to wander its 21,000-square-foot Italian food hall.

While smaller than Eataly’s massive locations in New York, Chicago, and Rome, the KOP outpost packs in a lot. It has imported pastas and olive oils, dramatic pastry cases, Roman-style pizza by the slice, espresso bars, a full-service restaurant, and enough branded merch to make it feel like an Italian food theme park.

The location, attached to the region’s retail epicenter and steps from the new Netflix House, is no accident. For suburban diners from across Montgomery County, Eataly offers a taste of big-city culinary spectacle without the Center City parking headaches.

That spectacle comes at a price. From $50-a-pound prosciutto to triple-digit olive oil gift boxes, Eataly leans hard into luxury. Still, the restaurant pricing largely mirrors Center City Italian spots, and the sheer novelty keeps people coming.

Guests probably won’t do their weekly grocery run here, but as a one-of-a-kind destination, Eataly fits right into King of Prussia’s evolution as a regional dining and entertainment hub.
