Dan Schlosberg of Lower Merion Joins Multi-Composer Opera Project

Lower Merion award-winning composer Dan Schlosberg.is joining nine other composers to create a new opera Complications in Sue.

In an unprecedented creative experiment, award-winning composer Dan Schlosberg of Lower Merion will collaborate with nine other composers, one librettist, one actor, and four singers to bring the new opera Complications in Sue to life, writes Vince Carey for the Daily Times.

Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning playwright Michael R. Jackson, who will be making his operatic debut, is presenting the new work in ten vignettes. Each vignette represents a different decade in the life of the main character, Sue, who will be performed by MacArthur Genius and cabaret icon Justin Vivian Bond.

Sue’s life will be presented to audiences in ten scenes, each lasting up to eight minutes and scored by a different composer.

“It is one of the craziest projects I have ever heard about, and I have ever attempted,” said Schlosberg. “That’s kind of why I love it.”

He was approached by Opera Philadelphia General Director & President Anthony Roth Costanzo about a year ago to take part in the project.

“It’s been such a blast,” said Schlosberg.

The opera will be performed at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia on February 4, 5, 6, and 8.
