Elkins Park’s Cole Kuhn Stands Among Nation’s Best High School Pitchers

Cole Kuhn, from Elkins Park, is among the top high school pitchers in the country and has already earned a scholarship to Duke University.

Cole Kuhn, a sixteen-year-old from Elkins Park, is among the top high school pitchers in the country and has already earned a scholarship to Duke University, writes Matt Breen for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

After appearing in just a handful of varsity high school games, his triple-digit fastballs have even drawn the attention of scouts for the 2027 Major League Baseball draft.

Kuhn, who attended St. Joseph’s Prep on a partial music scholarship, did not make the JV baseball team as a freshman. By January 2025, he was already throwing 90 mph when he joined Ascent Athlete, a Garnet Valley training center equipped with high-tech cameras and a team of coaches to analyze his mechanics. Now he can reach 101.7 mph on his fastball.

“Without question, that place is the single biggest driving force behind his major jumps over the last eight months,” said Kuhn’s mother, Tonya Lawrence. “They’re comprehensive, they’re involved, and they know what they’re doing.”

The general manager of Ascent, Scott Lawler, called Kuhn a “unicorn,” noting that he has never seen a high schooler with such an exceptional arm.
